Our Story
Pie in the Sky Vintage Emporium is an independently owned, hand-curated collection of vintage, retro and handmade clothing, accessories and homewares. Founded as an online Depop store in June 2020, to begin with Pie in the Sky was simply a place where I could resell my preloved collection of vintage and handmade clothing. Before too long this got me thinking about circular fashion as a whole, and thus, Pie in the Sky Vintage Emporium was born.
Growing up as one of three sisters, I always believed clothes were meant to last. After all, sometimes I would inherit clothes (still as good as new) in their third generation! Over the past 20 years, in both the UK and worldwide, mass production and fast-fashion has changed our relationship with clothes. No longer do we make our garments to last and mend them when they are broken, instead much of the affordable fashion is designed for a short-term lifespan. Sadly, much of these mass-produced pieces often end up buried in bottom of the wardrobe unloved, or thrown away. In fact, I was shocked to hear that per year in the UK each person is responsible for creating around 3.1kg of textile waste, with around 1.7kg estimated to end up in landfill sites.
Thankfully, with awareness on the current climate emergency and other problematic practices within the fast-fashion industry growing, more and more people are choosing to shop for their clothing sustainably. Personally, as both a huge lover of fashion and an ecologist, Pie in the Sky Vintage Emporium also aims to help with this mission!
Entranced by the bold, boho and psychedelic fabrics and patterns of the mid-century era, I source vintage and retro clothing exclusively with 60s, 70s and 80s vibes. I also love to upcycle, modernize, mend and adjust vintage garments, nothing brings me more joy than to give a new lease of life to pieces ready for their new owners and their next stories.
In June 2021, after a year of trading online, and a house move from London to Margate, Kent UK, I was lucky enough that creative hub UpMargate, a community initiative aiming to support independent traders, Designer makers, Artists and Start-ups in the area, welcomed me onboard.
As of 2024 we are trading solely online and at pop-up markets and events... be sure to follow us on social media to find out where we will be popping up next!
